    We investigate the effects of opacity of information a firm discloses on stock price synchronicity and crash risk. We develop an analytical model in the presence of firm-specific information and market-wide information. Stock price synchronicity is predicted to increase with the opacity of firm-specific information. Our model also reveals that stock crashes are more frequent and more severe for the opaque firms. These predictions are confirmed empirically. Further, our model predicts that after a catastrophic event stock prices become synchronous with the market because of investors' limited attention, and hence the frequency and severity of a stock crash increase. We use the Great East Japan Earthquake as a representative catastrophe to examine these implications, and provide support for the model. Finally, we find that a stock price of a firm disclosing opaque information tends to be synchronous with the market, and hence experiences a more serious crash from the earthquake, which is consistent with the model.

    Vortex structures and Reynolds stresses around a flat paddle in a mixing vessel have been investigated experimentally by two-component LDV measurement. Phase-averaged mean velocity and Reynolds stresses were obtained to observe the relative relation between the vortical structures and momentum transport. Development of Reynolds shear stress can be recognized along with the separated shear layer released from a flat paddle. Discharge and inflow induced by the roll vortex affect the magnitude of Reynolds shear stress in the separated shear layer. A four-quadrant analysis was applied to find the turbulent motions contributing to the production of the Reynolds shear stress. Most of the Reynolds shear stresses were found to be produced by two turbulent motions, namely, inflow just behind the paddle and large-scale-motion passing from behind the paddle vertically. The two turbulent motions are closely associated with the roll vortex.

    Our results show that by changing the size and the content of high chromium iron powder, carbides in roll steel can be easily controlled. It is well known that carbides as well as matrix play an important role in roll steel: A new P/M process, called "The Pre-mix Process", developed by KOBE STEEL, LTD., provides an easy way to control the properties of carbides such as size, content and morphology. In "The Pre-mix Process", high chromium iron powder is mixed with roll iron powder and then HIP'ed to a full density. During HIP'ing, high chromium iron powder changes into massive carbides whose size is almost the same as that of powder particles.

    We present an optimization algorithm for the design of multilayer antireflection (AR) coatings for organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. When a set of available materials for the AR films is given, the proposed method allows for searching the globally optimized AR structure that maximizes the short-circuit current density (JSC) under simulated solar light illumination (AM 1.5). By applying this method to an OPV solar cell with a configuration of Al/P3HT:PCBM/MoO3/ITO, we demonstrated that JSC can increase by 7.5% with a 6-layer AR coating, consisting of MgF2, ZnS, and Al2O3. A notable feature of this method is that it can find not only the optimal solution, which maximizes JSC, but also the quasi-optimal solutions, which increase JSC to nearly maximum levels. We showed that the quasi-optimal solution may have higher robustness against deviations in film thicknesses, from their designated values. This method indicates the importance of practically useful, non-optimal solutions for designing AR coatings. The present method allows for extending the user's choices and facilitates the realization of a practical design for an AR coating.

    Bending limit and deformation behavior of braided thermoplastic composite tubes by a new roll bending process in thermoforming are studied. The composite tubes with four kinds of initial fiber orientation from 18 to 47 degrees are fabricated by internal pressure bonding method, and used in the experiment. The roll bending process was performed by a newly developed roll bending equipment based on locally heating and cooling technique. Bending radius, fiber orientation, bending strain and circumferential strain of grids are measured. The experimental results show that the bending limit improves with increasing initial fiber orientation. Undesirable deformation occurs easily at inside and side of bent part in the case of small initial fiber orientation. The experimental bending limit agress with the calculated one obtained from geometrical configuration. The bending limit is affected by critical fiber orientation at outside of bent part and undesirable deformation at inside to side areas. It is confirmed that kinematic deformation mode of the braid with small initial fiber orientation in bending process contains not only the trellis effect but also slipping mode which also plays an important role in the roll bending process.
