  1. Ⅰ. Terms and Conditions for Browsing J-STAGE

    1. Article 1 (Purpose)

      1. 1. J-STAGE (hereinafter referred to as the “Service”) is an electronic journal site operated by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). The Service is used to publish journals and other contents issued by publishing organizations such as academic societies in Japan (hereinafter referred to as “Publishing Organizations”) (hereinafter referred to as "Registered Data") on the internet. The purpose of the Service is to improve the speed of publication of research results and the convenience to users, and to contribute to the promotion and development of science and technology.
      2. 2. These Terms and Conditions of the Service (hereinafter referred to as the "Terms") describe necessary matters on the use of the Service applicable to JST and those who view the Service (hereinafter referred to as the "Viewers").
    2. Article 2 (Copyright)

      1. 1. Copyrights and other rights regarding the Registered Data published on the Service belong to the Publishing Organizations or their authors, etc.
      2. 2. The Viewers can use the Registered Data only to the extent permitted without approval from the copyright holders by the Copyright Act, such as private use or citation, however, the approval of the copyright holders is required for reprinting, duplication, public transmission, translation, commercial use or making of derivative information (including compiling into databases), etc.. In the case that licensing conditions are defined for any Registered Data, the Viewers shall follow them.
    3. Article 3 (Prohibitions)

      1. 1. The Viewers shall not perform the following actions when using the Service.
        1. (1) Acts that infringe or may infringe on the intellectual property rights or other rights or interests of the Publishing Organizations, authors, JST, or other third parties relating to the Registered Data
        2. (2) Acts that violate laws and regulations or the Terms, or violate public order and morality, or acts that may cause these violations
        3. (3) Reverse engineering, disassembly, decompilation or extraction of source code for related systems and programs
        4. (4) Acts of unauthorized access, attempt to gain unauthorized access, and other actions that place an excessive load on the Service, or acts that interfere or may interfere with the operation or management of the Service, such as transmission of files infected with viruses, etc.
        5. (5) Acts of downloading a large amount of the Registered Data using mechanical or equivalent means
        6. (6) Acts contrary to the purpose of the Terms
        7. (7) Other acts which JST reasonably judges inappropriate
      2. 2. In the event that the Viewers have performed any of the acts set forth in the preceding paragraph, JST may suspend or restrict the use of the Service by the Viewers, or may take other measures as deemed appropriate by JST.
      3. 3. JST shall not be liable for any damages, losses, failures, expenses, etc. incurred by the Viewers caused by or related to suspension or restriction, etc. of the use of the Service under the preceding paragraph.
    4. Article 4 (Operational Restrictions and Disclaimers of the System)

      1. 1. JST may suspend, interrupt or go out of the operation of the Service when necessary to maintain, repair, or otherwise required for the Service.
      2. 2. The Registered Data may be changed, including addition, modification or deletion, etc. at any time, and the Viewers shall use the Service with understanding of the above.
      3. 3. JST shall not be liable for any damages, losses, failures, expenses, etc. incurred by the Viewers caused by or related to the interruption, etc. of the Service or the Registered Data under the preceding two paragraphs.
    5. Article 5 (Disclaimer)

      1. 1. The Viewers shall use the Service at their own risk, and JST shall not be liable for any damages, etc., incurred by the Viewers in connection with the use of the Service, except for intentional act or gross negligence of JST.
      2. 2. If a dispute arises with a third party regarding the use of the Service, the Viewers shall settle it at their expense and their responsibility, and JST shall not be involved except for intentional act or gross negligence of JST.
      3. 3. JST does not guarantee the accuracy or recency, etc. of the Registered Data. JST shall not be liable for any disputes or damages, etc. related to the accuracy or recency, etc. of the Registered Data arising in or incurred by the Viewers except for intentional act or gross negligence of JST.
    6. Article 6 (Changes and Termination of the Service)

      1.    JST may change the contents of the Service at JST's discretion. In addition, JST may terminate the provision of the Services upon advance notice.
    7. Article 7 (Change of the Terms)

      1.    When JST reasonably deems it necessary, JST may modify or add to the Terms with the determination of the effective date, and publish the Terms on the website or notify the Viewers of them in a manner deemed appropriate by JST.
    8. Article 8 (Compensation for Damages)

      1.    If the Viewers cause damage to JST with respect to the use of the Service, JST may claim damages against the Viewers.
    9. Article 9 (Governing Laws and Court of Jurisdiction)

      1.    The Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Japan. Any and all disputes in connection with the use of the Service shall submit to the exclusive agreed jurisdiction of the Tokyo District Court at the first instance.

  2. Ⅱ. Use of materials on J-STAGE

    J-STAGE is an electronic journal platform to publish journals on science and technology (including humanities and social sciences) issued by the publishing organizations such as academic societies in Japan. Its services are planned and managed by JST, and the contents of journals are edited, uploaded, and issued by the respective publishing organizations. Copyrights of contents are managed by the publishing organizations. Please contact the publishing organization for the following matters:

    • Editorial policy
    • Submission
    • Subscription
    • Requests for permission to photocopy or republish material etc.

    You can find the contact information of the publishing organization from “About the journal” on the top page of each journal.

  3. Ⅲ. Privacy Policy

    1. 1. Information to be Collected

      1. J-STAGE site records the Viewers information in the form of access logs. The access log includes the domain name and IP address of the Viewer, type of browser used, date and time of access, and the viewed pages but excludes information that identifies individuals. The access log is used for the maintenance of J-STAGE and statistical analysis of usage, not for any other purposes.

      2. On J-STAGE site, cookies can be used to analyze browsing status and effectively distribute information on the web. Cookies are only used to identify the Viewers’ computer and do not contain any personally identifiable information.
        The Viewers could refuse the use of cookies, but the setting method differs depending on the browser used. Please refer to the “Help” menu of the browser for specific settings for cookies. If the Viewers choose to reject all cookies, they can be restricted in some ways, such as using some services on the internet.

      3. In the case that the Viewers wish to use My J-STAGE service, their e-mail addresses are required to register. JST will collect the information, registered by My J-STAGE user, regarding favorite materials, favorite articles, favorite searches and, alert services ("Register Alerts" or "Citation Alerts"), as well as the frequency of access and accessed pages (the "Users Information").

    2. 2. Purpose of Use

      1. The collected access information will be used through statistical analysis for understanding the trend of usage of J-STAGE such as the trend of access in order to provide further effective services, as well as for monitoring excessive or unauthorized use and for recovering from system failures. J-STAGE occasionally uses Cookies for confirming the authentication information of users.

      2. The Viewers' mail addresses registered for use of My J-STAGE service will be used as a login ID for My J-STAGE service, and also for sending alert services ("Register Alerts" or "Citation Alerts") and notices from the Publishing Organizations and JST. The Viewers information of My J-STAGE user will be used through statistical analysis for understanding the user's tendency of usage in order to improve the level of the Service.

    3. 3. Disclosure of Information

      JST may disclose the collected information, to a necessary extent, to institutions (the Publishing Organizations or operation companies, etc.) which are involved in the operation of J-STAGE only for the purpose within "2. Purpose of Use". Apart from the above, the collected access information will not be used for any other purpose or be provided to third parties unless disclosure is required by law or due to some illegal acts such as unauthorized access or interference, etc. However, the collected information may be disclosed after being statistically processed.

    4. 4. Usage of the Collected Information

      JST will take necessary measures to prevent divulgation, loss or damage of the collected information and to appropriately manage such information.

    Note: A full text article from a title published in "Japanese and English" may be written in Japanese even if it has an abstract in English. If you would like to obtain the full English article, please confirm with the publisher prior to your purchase. Clicking on the menu bar of the journal's top page allows you to check the publisher's contact information or the publication language.

    1. 1. Terms

      The following Terms and Conditions, govern the entire use of the Pay-Per-View System. Please note that you are deemed to have agreed to the Terms and Conditions of Use after you purchase a document via the Pay-Per-View System.

      • Copyright

        • The purchased documents and all the contents currently available via the Pay-Per-View System are protected by copyrights under international conventions (unless otherwise indicated on the title page of the document).

        • The copyright holder is indicated in the column of the document information.

        • You may freely use the purchased documents to the extent permitted by copyright laws, such as private use or quotation; however, prior written consent of the copyright holder is required if you reprint, duplicate, publicly transmit, translate, commercially use the document or make any derivative information in relation thereto (including compiling the documents into a database).

      • Use of Cookies

        • In the Pay-Per-View System, cookies are used as a session control device in order to control the connection with your computer.

        • In the Pay-Per-View System, we use cookies that are deleted on closing the browser.

        • In order to use the Pay-Per-View System, users must set their browsers to accept cookies.

        • We do not use cookies to keep track of other sites you have visited or to acquire any personal information about you.

        • We will delete all of the cookies when you complete your purchase order and close your browser.

      • Additional Terms

        • These rules may be amended as necessary without notice in advance. Your use of the Pay-Per-View System shall be conclusively deemed as acceptance of such modification.
          Your use of the Pay-Per-View System after the amendment is deemed as your consent to such amendment.

    2. 2. Privacy Policy

      We, JST, in light of the importance of protecting personal information collected through the operation of the Pay-Per-View System, shall take the necessary measures to protect such personal information from any improper divulgence. Please note that you are deemed to have agreed to the Privacy Policy after you purchase a document via the Pay-Per-View System.

      • Usage of the Collected Information

        • Personally identifiable information (your name, email address, etc.) provided by you will be used for our statistical analysis in order for us to offer more satisfactory services to you, as well as to monitor any excessive or unauthorized use and recover from any system failures.

        • Access information (including but not limited to users' domain-names, IP addresses and the pages accessed) is automatically collected on Pay-Per-View System; however, we will never identify any individual by such collected data.

        • The collected information will not be used for any other purpose or be provided to third parties unless disclosure is required by law or due to some illegal acts such as unauthorized access or interference, etc.

      • About change of a privacy policy

        • These policies may be amended as necessary without notice in advance. Your use of the Pay-Per-View System shall be conclusively deemed acceptance of such modification.

        • Your use of the Pay-Per-View System after the amendment is deemed as your consent to such amendment.
