1. Calorimetric studies on the hydrolytic reactions of maltose and phenly α-maltoside catalyzed by gluc-amylase of Rh. Delemar have been made using a Dewar vessel type calorimeter.
2. In order to obtain the adiabatic change of temperature in the system, a graphical adiabatic treatment method on a time-temper-ature curve has been devised. With this method it is unnecessary to attain the complete thermal equilibrium between the calori-meter and the surroundings and also to estimate the heat of stirring.
3. The heats of hydrolysis of maltose and phenyl α-maltoside have been found to be ΔH=-1100cal/mol and -1070cal/mol at 25°C and ΔH=-1140cal/mol and -1140cal/ mol at 35°C, respectively.
The authors are indebted to Prof. J. Fukumoto and Dr. Y. Tsujisaka of the Osaka Municipal Technical Research Institute for helpful guidance in the pre-paration of glucamylase and also for a gift of crysta-lline enzyme.
The authors are also grateful to Mr. Z. Hamauzu for the preparation of phenyl α-maltoside.
