Diffuse heterotopic cysts were observed in the gastric submucosa of 28 cases (2.3%) out of 1230 undergoing gastrectomy. Multiple carcinomas, atypical hyperplasia and erosions were frequently observed in the mucosa on diffuse submucosal cysts. It is thought that repeated erosion and regeneration give rise to these submucosal cysts and, on the other hand, cause carcinoma; diffuse submucosal cysts are not precancerous, but paracancerous lesion.
Clinically, special attention should be paid for operation method and postoperative care in patients with diffuse submucosal cysts in the stomach.
