Abstract
We experienced a patient with Cronkhite-Canada syndrome associated with a gastric cancer, in whom postoperative steroid administration reduced polyposis and improved the nourishment after gastrectomy.
A 55-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of 4-5 episodes of severe diarrhea daily and alopecia. The patient displayed characteristic clinical and pathological pictures of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome associatd with a gastric cancer. Total gastrectomy was carried out. After the operation, inspite of hyperalimentation with antiplasmin agents, diarrhea and hypoproteinemia persisted. Predonine therapy was started. After the therapy his symptoms improved. Morevover, hypercarcinoembryonic antigenemia improved along with a reduction of colon polyposis. It was supposed that hypercarcinoem-bryonic antigenemia was caused by disorder of CEA secretion from colonic mucosa due to polyposis. There has been no sign of recurrence, as of 6 months after the operation.
