A 73-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of massive melena without any subjective symptoms. Emergency endoscopy revealed a tumor with smooth and regular surface and central ulceration in the second portion of the duodenum. It was transformed by the compression of the biopsy forceps and had a wide-based peduncle. Endoscopic ultrasound visualized a hyperechoic mass, which was characteristic of lipoma. Surgical treatment was indicated in order to avoid complication. The pathological diagnosis obtained at surgical extirpation was spindle cell lipoma. There have been no symptoms as of 7 months after the resection.
In this paper some notes on 79 cases of duodenal lipoma with massive hemorrhage published in this country are also presented.
