Abstract

We have experienced a case of goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix. A 71-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Close examination showed a mass lesion about 4cm in diameter in the ileocecal resion and an ileus of the small intestine with massive ascites. Emergency laparotomy was performed and we diagnosed the case as cecal cancer and an ileus due to numerous metastases to the distant peritoneum. An ileocecal resection and a partial resection of the ileum were performed. The histopathological diagnosis was goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix (p3, se, ly3, v3, n 1). After the operation, chemotherapy with low dose CDDP-5 FU was started. He was well for nine months after the operation without retention of ascites. Eventually he died of cancerous cachexia 10 months after the operation. Goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix is rare, and only 52 cases including our case, have been reported in the Japanese literature. Here, we report this rare case with a review of the literature.
