Recently the exfoliated ultrathin sheets from layered inorganic materials have attracted an extensive attention because of their application to thin film-type electronic devices and sensors. Among a variety of layered inorganic compounds, smectite clay minerals are a unique candidate because of their abundance in nature and kindness for environment. For these purposes, we have prepared a cast film of exfoliated clay and studied its electronic conduction through the hetero-interface.

This study aims to elucidate the surface alteration of mortar reacted with seawater. Tablet type specimen (3.5-cm diameter, 1.0-cm height), made from high-early-strength portland (HES) or alumina (AL) cement, was treated with seawater (200 mL) with salt concentration of 0.25 or 2.0 for 91 days at room temperature. Under low salt concentration, brucite and aragonite were formed. Brucite was produced remarkably at HES, while aragonite was remarkably at AL. Under high salt concentration, aragonite production was promoted. Column or needle shaped aragonite was formed on thin layer of brucite.

4 and HCl solutions at pH 4, and distilled water at about 50 degree for different periods of time up to 580 days in an open system using an improved Soxhlet extraction apparatus.
