Photocatalytic Activity of Silica-coated Titania Particles

Abstract

The photocatalytic activities of SiO₂-coated TiO₂ particles were investigated in the formic acid suspension system. The SiO₂ films were precipitated onto TiO₂ particles from an silca gel-saturated solution of H₂SiF₆. It was found that the SiO₂-coating effectively decreased the photocatalytic activity of the TiO₂ particles, especially anatase. The results were discussed on the basis of the mechanism of the reaction proposed.
