Abstract
Hiroo Hospital deployed a number of its human assets along with medical supplies in response to the landslide disaster triggered by Typhoon 26 which struck the Izu-Oshima Islands on Oct. 16, 2013.We transferred eight trauma patients in severe condition to our facility via airlift. The Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) performed confined space medicine at the disaster site. 4 days after the landslide occurred, we transferred fourteen in-patients from Oshima Medical Center by airplane. Through this experience we were exposed to numerous difficulties surrounding disaster medical support on small island theaters where immediate access to patients without the aid of helicopters or airplanes is unfathomable. Enhanced cooperation between various agencies/ organizations is imperative in order to provide appropriate care to disaster victims.
