We have fabricated oxidation-resistant films such as glass and β-FeSi
2 on sintered Mg
2Si in order to improve the oxidation resistance of Mg
2Si. Moreover, the oxidation mechanism of Mg
2Si was investigated using the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (JMA) equation. The Avrami exponent (n) is ∼0.5, indicating that the reaction is controlled by the diffusion mechanism. The sintered Mg
2Si coated by β-FeSi
2 thin film fabricated by RF magnetron sputtering shows a good oxidation resistance.

YSZ electrolyte was screen-printed on NiO-YSZ anode which was prepared by tape casting using water as a solvent. The sheet thus obtained was co-fired to fabricate NiO-YSZ/YSZ half cell. By screen printing and firing LSM-YSZ cathode on the half cell, 80 mm-sized solid oxide fuel cell was successfully fabricated. The power density of the cell was as high as 0.48 W/cm
2 at 800 ˚C.

The liquid electrolyte in the Dye-sensitized Solar Cell (DSC), leads to several technological problems such as: solvent evaporation, leak and sublimation of iodine. In order to solve these problems, the electrolyte is replaced by a solid hole conductor. The solid state DSC was fabricated using In-situ polymerized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)(PEDOT) as a hole conductor. PEDOT has high charge transport property (conductivity:550 Scm-1) and high transparency in visible range. The resulting cell showed good stability and high photovoltaic performance.

SnP2O7 samples for the application to the electrolyte of fuel cells operated at intermediate temperatures were synthesized from Sn(HPO4)2H2O. The results of XRD and SEM revealed the synthesized samples were SnP2O7 including small amount of SnO2 and had a layered structure. In addition, positively-charged indium chloride complex which may be intercalated into the interlayers of Sn(HPO4)2H2O were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and electrophoresis.

The diffuse reflectance spectra showed the blue shift of the optical band gap and the decrease in the electron carriers with increasing Sr content, probably due to the decrease in the Sn - O bond length. Temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient revealed that the ceramics were

The local structure of oxygen defect in yittria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) oxide ionic conductor has been investigated by O-17 and Y-89 solid state MAS-NMR. Y-89 NMR spectra show multiple peaks corresponding to yttrium ions in different coordination number. With increasing the Yttria content, O-17 NMR spectra changed peak shape and the chemical shift . The observed spectral change was interpreted in terms of the oxygen local structure and the defect formation.

AlN-filled polymer composites with high thermal conductivities were prepared using spherical AlN fillers with the bimodal size distribution via the optimal blend of submicron-sized fillers and the large filler with a mean particle size of 13 micron. The submicron-sized spherical AlN fillers were synthesized by heating the commercial AlN powder with a mean primary particle size of 0.6 micron in Ca-Al-O-N flux below 1700C. The fluidity of the bimodal spherical AlN-polymer system at a volume fraction of small fillers in total solids of 0.25 decreased with increasing the size ratio (L/S) of the large spherical AlN (L) per the small one (S). The highest thermal conductivity was achieved by blending the smallest spherical AlN.

The BN precursor sample was synthesized by heating the partially-decomposed sample from 723 K to 973 ~ 1273 K in nitrogen atmosphere after the partial decomposition of melamine diborate from R.T. to 723 K in air. It was found that this BN precursor sample has a similar specific surface area of commercially available activated carbon. In this study, the influence of cooling rate in the precipitation of melamine diborate crystal to chemical composition, specific surface area, and micro pore distribution of the BN precursor sample was examined. The formation of BN precursor with highly specific surface area was discussed.

The charateristic diffraction peak of mesoporous structure at 2Theta = 2 to 6 angle in XRD were observed for the obtained products. The structure of mesoporous silica were kept even if fired at 1000 degrees. The adsorption/desorption isotherm of mesoporous silica fired at 550 degrees became 4 type, and changed to 1 type with fired at 900 degrees.

Patterning process of organic-inorganic hybrid film containing latent pigments and photo acid generator has been investigated. After mixing latent pigments, photo acid generators and SiO2 polymer sol with phenyl group, the film was formed on glass substrate. And then this film was exposed to ultra-violet rays, followed by heating. After the film was washed by alkali solution, 50-micro meters fine pattern film was obtained. The acid generators accelerate the sol-gel reaction and the conversion from latent pigments to pigments.

The reaction of yttrium chloride and trimethoxyborane in 1,4-butanediol directly yielded YBO
3 crystals having flower-like morphology. In this work, the reactions of yttrium chloride and trimethoxyborane in 1,4-butanediol in the presence of various amines were investigated. The glycothermal reaction in the presence of
n-alkylamine, ethylenediamine or diethylenetriamine directly yielded YBO
3 crystals having flower-like morphology. However, the irregularly shaped particles were obtained by glycothermal reaction in the presence of amines having bulky substituents, such as dipropylamine or triethylamine.

3 derived by calcination of these products at 1000ºC had surface area of 110–125 m
2/g and pore volume of 0.3–0.6 cc/g. When the product was recovered by the removal of the solvent by flash evaporation after the solvothermal treatment, the xerogel products had still higher surface area (680–700 m
2/g) and pore volume (2–3 cc/g). Alumina derived by calcination of the xerogel at 1000ºC had surface area of 150 m
2/g and quite a large pore volume (0.8–1.2 cc/g).

Rutile-type titanium oxide nano-particles were prepared by hydrothermal treatment of titanium-tartrate complex in the presence of large amount of hydrogen peroxide. Particle size of the prepared rutile was about 10 nm. Photocatalytic activity of the rutile sample by degradation of methanol vapor was lower than that of an anatase sample which has same particle size as the rutile. It suggests that photocatalytic activity depends on their crystal structure rather than specific surface area.

Application of water as a solvent is essential to prevent formation of volatile boron compounds and to synthesize single phase material by a solution technique. It was found that the activities of the samples synthesized under the identical temperature and time by aqueous solution approach and solid state reaction (SSR) were comparable, while in the presence of 1mM NaOH(aq) the activity of K

The structural and chemical evolution of tin deposited titania substrates during oxidative annealing is investigated for developing a novel substrate for tin dioxide film growth. Metal tin film is found to react with titania even at 573 K, and some of tin atoms still remain as a metal state under this condition. The full oxidation (+4) of tin atoms is not completed by annealing even at 973K. The multilayered structure found in the sample annealed at 1273 K is disappeared and a thick tin-doped titania layer is formed by annealing at 1323 K.

2 thin films on single-crystal SrTiO
3 substrates with (100), (110), (111) planes. After the deposition, the orientation relationship between LiCoO

2 on SrTiO
3 substrates. The growth of LiCoO
