In order to be sustaining the recycling-oriented society, we addressed the increase of the amount of industrial wastes and by-products as cement raw materials. At the same time, the cement manufacturers are under the obligations to maintain the stable supply of and the quality of cements. At the presentation, we introduce the cement composition design toward increasing the amount of recycling materials, and the properties of the cements that were prepared in this study.

We have done the creativity promotion experiment to improve student's problem discovery and problem solving ability. An important factor to decide the success or failure of the experiment is to give an appropriate incentive to the student. The relation between some incentive and result in the student experiment was examined.

Frictional properties were measured for carbon nano-fibre reinforced plastics (CNFRP) and C/C composites derived from it. Stronger friction compared to matrix was obtained by addition of 4-12wt% carbon nano-fibre(CNF). Slight anisotropy was observed depending on the blading direction. Friction was decreased and the anisotropy was lost by the addition of 15% CNF. AFM observation revealed that the anisotropy is based on the ordering of polymer chain directions, not on CNF orientations. Frictional coefficients of C/C composites derived from CNFRP was smallest for the sample heat-treated at 2000 degrees C, which gave the flattest surface.

Spectrum analyses of those heat capacities provided phonon density of states of those compounds, which showed existence of characteristic energy phonon modes at low energy and band gap at medium energy. These are characteristic features of negative thermal expansion materials.

Fine pores in high concentration slurries were observed directly by using the confocal scanning laser fluorescent microscopy. We focused on the fine pores which were remained after de-airing treatments of the slurry. In order to observe fine pores, we prepared transparent slurry which consists of SiO
2-glass powder particles and glycerol-water premix or aqueous sucrose solution, which refractive indexes were controlled to lessen scattering. Fine pores were identified and evaluated quantitatively from photo images.

Experiments of pressureless sintering of a high-purity boron carbide powder were carried out by using some carbides such as SiC, Al4C3 and WC as sintering additives. With changing combinations and amount of the various sintering additives, the densification behaviors of B4C greatly changed. While their contents were within certain limits, all the three carbides could promote the densification of B4C. In the presence of a vapor containing Al element, a B4C powder compact doped with a small amount of SiC and WC was sintered to a relative density of 97%.

A comparative study of the sintering behavior of Pb(Zr

3 (PZT) ceramics prepared by aerosol deposition (AD) and conventional solid-state sintering (CV) was performed employing same starting powder. PZT thick-films with thickness of 300 um were deposited on the substrate by AD at 600C. Then, bulk PZT ceramics were obtained by etching the substrate, followed by firing at various temperatures from 800 to 1200C for 3 h in air. High remanent polarization (P
r) was achieved in the relatively small grain size (40 uC/cm
2 for 0.42 um) in AD as compared with CV (40 uC/cm
2 for 1.00 um). Furthermore, relatively high Vickers hardness (Hv) was achieved in AD as compared with CV below the grain size of 1.0 um. Therefore, it is expected that piezoelectric ceramics with high mechanical properties can be prepared by AD without any sacrifice in electrical properties.

We have investigated the interaction between oxygen vacancies (Vo••) and domain dynamics in ferroelectric Bi4Ti3O12 (BiT) crystals during the a-axis polarization switching. Piezoresponse force microscope (PFM) observations showed that, even after a high electric field of 100 kV/cm was applied along the a(b) axis, a large number of unswitched 90-deg domains were present in the BiT crystals grown in air. The 90-deg domain walls with irregularly curved configurations were observed, which suggests that the motion of 90-deg domain walls was clamped by Vo•• in the crystals. PFM observations also revealed that the number of unswitched 90-deg domains were significantly reduced in the crystals grown at a higher oxygen pressure. These results demonstrate that the 90-deg domain walls are clamped by Vo••, leading to a lower remanent polarization in the BiT system.

12(YAG) ceramics have been investigated to compare with the case of YAG single crystal. Relative densities of the YAG ceramics prepared at 1650C were 99(1)%, which were independent on the sintering duration time up to 24 h. On the other hand, average grain size increased with increasing the sintering time. The
Qf value of the prepared YAG ceramics increased with sintering time, which is similar behavior to the case of the average grain size.

BNT-BZT crystals showed a clear piezoelectric butterfly loop with a strain maximum / electric-field maximum (Smax/Emax) of 136 pm/V. These results suggest that BZT act as an effective end member of the solid solution with BNT.

15/SUB> (KSN) piezoelectric type ceramics were prepared by Pulsed Current Hot Pressing. Sintering was conducted at temperatures ranging from 1000C to1250C under vacuum under 40MPa. The heating rate was 50K/min and the soaking time was in the range of 0 to 20 min. The microstructure and the phase identification were analyzed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The density of the sintered ceramics increased with an increasing in sintering temperatures as well as in soaking time. Materials with a near-theoretical density of the could be attained by sintering at 1250C for 10 min.

On the other hand, we prepared powder samples at same condition which prepared thin films for measurement of surface area. As the result, we obtained the thin film that has porous surface and large surface area. This microstructured Pt/WO

Atmosphere sensitive wide-gap pn junction: NiO/ZnO heterojunction is prepared by processing micro-rectangular holes on the heterojunction element. The electrical characteristics of the NiO/ZnO heterojunction depends on the crystal plane of ZnO substrate and NiO/ZnO(O-face) junction shows better rectifying character. The NiO/ZnO (O-face) heterojunction works as a VOC sensor at room temperature, and the current increases by introducing the acetone vapor. Effect of UV incident on the VOC gas sensing characteristics will be discussed.
