Abstract
This article focuses on the role of a facilitator who acts as a mediator between children and artworks in the interactive art appreciation program, and emphasizes the importance of knowledge and technique of a facilitator in such interactive activities for encouraging children's intellectual curiosity in artworks and for improving the quality of experience that children can have through art appreciation. To verify this we examined the specific practice that we have had with the 4th grade elementary school pupils at Otsuka Museum of Art in 2007, from the art history point of view as well as that of practical art education. Our example shows clearly that it is indispensable for mediators to have knowledge of artworks and art appreciation so that they can assist children with understanding artworks effectively by picking up their opinions and questions, then giving them suggestions so as to help them store the knowledge they gain in a natural way.
