Abstract
4-Vinylpyridine-jV-isopropylacrylamide(4VP-NIPAAm)copolymerswerepreparedbyradicalcopolymerization.The4VP-NIPAAmcopolymerswerereactedwithvariousalkyliodides(CH:)I,CtHgl,C8HitI)andthecopolymei､(4VPNR-NIPAAm)containingpyridiniumgroupshavingmethyl,butyloroctylgroupsworeobtained.Thequarternizedratiowasaffectedbythereactiontimeandthetemperature.The4VPNR-NIPAAmcopolymersobtainedhadthermosensitivityornothermosensitivitydependingonthedegreeofquarternizationofpyridinegroupsandchainlengthofalkylgroupsintroducedintopyridiniumgroups.Thetemperaturedcpcndenceofthetransmittanceof4VPNR-NIPAAmcopolymersolutionsat660nmincreasedwithincreasingNaClconcentrationofthesolutions.ThesecopolymershadhighflocculationabilityagainstbacteriasuspensionssuchasE.coliandtheabilitywasaffectedbythedegreeofquarternizationofpyridinegroupsandchainlengthofalkylgroupsintroducedintopyridiniumgroups.Theyalsohadantibacterialactivityagainstbacteria
