Abstract

This paper discusses the thermal, thermos-oxidative and photo-degradation mechanisms of polymers. It explains the extent to which the magnitude of the bond dissociation energy affects the rate of degradation. It also explains the concept of bond dissociation energy and its relevance to the absorption of light by molecules, which can lead to excitation and potential bond cleavage. This paper highlights the role of chromophores, including functional groups and impurities, in initiating photodegradation processes. It also addresses the nonuniform distribution of active species within materials due to light absorption, following Lambert-Beer’s law. The paper further elaborates on the vibrational states of molecules and how high-energy states can facilitate bond breaking upon light absorption. These issues underscore the complexity of photodegradation, which involves multiple pathways such as reaction, deactivation, and energy transfer. This paper aims to enhance the understanding of polymer degradation and stabilization mechanisms, contributing to the development of more durable polymer materials. This paper concludes by emphasizing the importance of ongoing research in this field to establish a scientific foundation for practical strategies to improve polymer longevity and performance under various conditions.
