Abstract

The mechanical properties and fracture behavior of carbon fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP)are determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, fiber properties, matrix resin properties, laminate structure, fiber volume content, fiber orientation and fiber/resin interface properties. The role of the matrix resin in CFRP is to provide excellent mechanical properties under any loading direction by stress transfer. This report describes the effect of the matrix resin structure on the mechanical properties and fracture behavior of CFRP was described, focusing on matrix resin properties and the CF/resin interface properties. The relationship between the molecular structure and higher order structure for the matrix resin and the mechanical properties and fracture behavior using methacrylate copolymers, which are expected to be the matrix resin for carbon fiber reinforced plastics(CFRTP), have been reviewed.
