Short History of Optical Methods in Experimental Mechanics and Practical Application to Industry

Abstract

In this paper, optical methods in experimental mechanics are discussed in terms of the history of academic societies, international conferences, and famous studies. Next, the author’s recent studies on the moiré and grating methods are introduced. To use these methods and techniques to provide practically useful systems for industry, it is important to develop user-friendly and reliable equipment. Some comments on this point and the future outlook for optical methods are presented according to the author’s experience establishing a venture company.
