Abstract
The effects of juvenile hormone (JH) and ecdysone on glycerol and carbohydrate contents were investigated in diapausing larvae of the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis WALKER.Glycerol production was stimulated in haemolymph of diapausing larvae by the application of 0.01 μg of JH-I, whereas it was rather inhibited by 1 μg of this hormone. Further, similar phenomena were also observed in the larvae applicated with JH analogues. On the other hand, glycerol exhaustion was caused by injection with β-ecdysone. However, the same effect of β-ecdysone on glycerol was not observed at the low temperature of 4°C.It is considered that glycerol content may be regulated by JH and ecdysone.Trehalose concentration in haemolymph of diapausing larvae appeared to be unaffected by the JH and ecdysone. However, the glycogen content was affected by the application of these two hormones. The relation between glycogen and glycerol was also discussed.
