Abstract
This paper proposes a method to improve 3D model retrieval performance by using localized shape features. In the proposed approach, a 3D model to be compared is partitioned into six sub-parts simply by three orthogonal planes. The planes are derived from the principal axes of inertia of the model. An overall distance from the model to another model is computed as the sum of distances from the features of corresponding six sub-parts. Experimental evaluation showed that the proposed simple approach to localized shape feature set improved retrieval performance of eight shape feature we have tried.
