Abstract

Three-dimensional (3D) image has been attracting much attention as a future visual media. This presentation addresses a problem that 3D image requires tremendous amount of data, which can be tens or hundreds times of data than that of 2D image. We first introduce 3D image coding technologies which have been investigated in this field, and then describe trends and future directions of the 3D image coding technologies, especially in the international standardization activities, such as JPEG and MPEG.
