Reorganization and Future of SC 29

Abstract

ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 is a sub-committee which has developed fundamental international standards such as JPEG and MPEG. Following the establishment of JPEG as a group, another group MPEG was established in 1988 before the establishment of SC 29. 32 years later, SC 29 has been significantly reorganized in 2020. Major changes are that the sub-groups under MPEG has been elevated to WGs. The activities as JPEG and MPEG continue. Here the brief history of SC 29 and the intent of its reorganization including its future are described. Some of recent activities in MPEG which consists of multiple WG/AGs are introduced as well.
