A database of crossing records of wheat cultivars was developed using a Prolog-KABA interpreter. Five ancestors contributed, collectively, 59.4% and 7 ancestors contributed 66.9% to the gene pool for cultivars developed by Kyushu Natl. Agric. Exp. Stn. Cluster analysis based on coefficients of parentage between possible pairs of 16 cultivars revealed that these cultivars formed three clusters relating to the predominant parents. Cultivars which related to 'Asakazekomugi' had low values of flour whiteness, showing that 'Asakazekomugi' had a poor combining ability in quality though it was a high yield cultivar and used as cross parents extensively in Japan. Cultivars which related to 'Kanto 107' had high maximum viscosity values.
