Abstract
Cities differ in many aspects and resemble in some aspects. Their geographical, historical, cultural and social conditions have resulted in the variation of development process, structure, and functions of the cities. To give order to the variety of cities, the method of city classification is used. Referring to the Egyptian census data of 1986 for 73 districts including 58 cities in "Cairo Regional Area (namely Cairo, Giza and Qalyubiya Governorates)", I submit: (1) 6 subareas (settlement patterns) of "Cairo Regional Area" using social area analysis (factorial ecology) basedon 20 variables and cluster analysis. (2) Twelve hypothesized types of Egyptian cities using principal component analysis with analyzing the same variables and cluster analysis.
