Abstract
The aim of this study is to clarify the distribution pattern of organic agricultural production areas in Japan. By using the data of 2000 agricultural census, which has first-listed item 'Practices in Sustainable Agriculture', the presenter found the difference of the distribution pattern between 'sustainable agriculture' in all and 'organic agriculture' practices characterized by 'no' chemicals use. The latter shows scattered distribution. Organic agricultural production areas are often located in following areas; mountainous areas characterized by the production of tea or rice, hilly areas producing vegetables or rice, and adjacent areas to Tokyo with vegetables. These areas tend to have promoters, such as agricultural cooperatives, municipalities and organic producers groups, for collective practices to organic farming. In many cases, organic farming has promoted for revitalization of the local agriculture.
