Abstract
 Needless to say, the prime role of school is for educational practices in the community.This study aims at clarifying the critical aspects of local residents’ perception in school’s role in solitary small-scale islands : Minna island, Motobu town, Geruma island, Zamami village, Oogami island, Miyakojima city, and Hatoma island, Taketomi town in Okinawa prefecture.
 In these islands, school’s role is not only to maintain educational sustainability but also to continue multi-functional roles of the island community viable.
