Abstract

In order to consider the significance of traditional local festivals in modern Japan, it will be useful to take a close look at entertainments performed at the festivals. Combined with the symbolic aspect of the festivals, they contribute to create festive time-space which reflects the construct, characteristics and vision of a community. The case of a traditional music festival Owara Kazenobon in Yatsuo, Toyama prefecture, gives us rich information on the process of re-creation of festive time-space led by Owara Preservation Society. This presentation will explain the organization and activities of the Society and suggest an effective approach to study regional culture through folk performing arts and entertainments.
