Abstract

Changes in the typhoon tracks attacking the Kanto area were investigated for the 1951-2019 period. We defined typhoon moving direction for each typhoon using the best track data from the Japan Meteorological Agency. The typhoon moving direction revealed that typhoon approached the Kanto area from west-southwest direction before 1980. However, typhoon moving direction has shifted to SSW-SSE direction after 1980. We also found that the number of typhoons attacking the Kanto area has increased and the central pressure of typhoons is getting lower since 1980.
