Abstract

The policy of the Japanese Government to promote the intelligent wireless access services lays emphasis for islands on the submarine optical cable systems. Old micro-wave channels connected to islands have been replaced with submarine optical cable channels throughout Japan. In this paper, the policies of the Japanese Government to diffuse the intelligent wireless access services are firstly reviewed. Then, the recent attempts on Tobishima, a small island in the Sea of Japan, to improve the community infrastructures using the smart phone technologies inspired by the construction of the submarine optical cable system are examined.
