Abstract

In the first half of the 2000s, the Vancouver metropolitan area was highly evaluated as the most livable city in the world. These are the changes in the socio-economic environment surrounding the Vancouver metropolitan area since the latter half of the 2000s and the new regional issues that have arisen. This research clarifies the policy responses and the current situation and issues of actual local efforts. In Metro 2050, formulated in February 2023 by Metro Vancouver, the regional government of the Vancouver metropolitan area, new efforts are being made to (1) expand the scope of central area development and (2) develop Frequency Transit Development Areas. In the former, five additional community-level locations were designated. In the latter, 16 districts with high public transportation convenience are newly targeted, and the aim is to advance land use not only in the conventional limited bases but also in a wide range of urban areas.
