Abstract

The Khumbu region including Mt. Everest in the eastern Himalayas of Nepal, is located at an altitude above 3,500m. Traditional agropastoralism which combines crop growing and livestock breeding, has been managed by Sherpas. The Khumbu keeps many temporary summer settlements. They cultivate potatoes in some summer settlements. Traditional agropastoralism involves traveling with their livestock between some summer settlements and permanent settlements. Sherpa communities have been greatly affected by the tourism development after World War II. Today, only the basic form of traditional agropastoralism is maintained and the Khumbu Sherpas have been facing various problems that threaten their agropastoralism as subsistence.
