Abstract

This study explores the spatial dynamics of technological innovation in Japan from 1975 to 2014, focusing on concentration and colocation patterns across different technology sectors. Using patent data from the Japan Patent Office, the analysis reveals significant shifts in the clustering of technologies, driven by regionalization policies aimed at decentralizing innovation activities. While certain technologies, such as semiconductors, became increasingly concentrated in innovation hubs, others like agriculture remained dispersed. The findings highlight the evolving interplay between regional specialization and knowledge flows, offering insights into the effectiveness of policy measures and their implications for fostering inclusive, resilient innovation systems.
