Abstract

In developing sustainable tourism, there are challenges and chances that are unique to islands. Limited natural and human resources, climate-dependent access, and peripheralization in terms of power relations are challenges that can be countered by the experience of making effective use of these limited resources, unique environmental and cultural resources, and a strong tourism image (Graci & Dodds 2010). This presentation will examine the possibilities and conditions for sustainable island tourism, using three remote islands in Japan that are World Heritage sites, national parks, and geoparks, and therefore should be aiming for sustainable tourism development.
