The Geographical Indication (GI) Protection system is a mechanism for protecting the names of agricultural, forestry, and fishery products and foods that reflect the unique natural environment and cultural background of a region as intellectual property, and was introduced in Japan in 2015. The expected effects of the GI system include the elimination of counterfeit products, price increases, and improved brand value (Ebata et al., 2018). However, there are voices from producers that the GI system has not necessarily achieved the expected effects. Naito et al. (2020) point out that while approximately 70% of producers expected an increase in sales volume as a result of obtaining a GI, less than 40% of producers responded that they had actually seen an effect.
This study aims to clarify the factors that affect consumer perception of GI products, focusing on the connection between regions and products.
