Abstract

The term “PROVISIONAL” is derived from the Latin word “Pro - Video,” with its origins traced back to 1926 when members, led by McCollum and Stallard, established the “California Gnathology Society.” They proposed the concept of “Gnathological Concept” and within it stated, “Wearing the Gold Provisional Restoration for an extended period to verify the effectiveness of the treatment.” Harold-R.-Stanley introduced the term “PROVISIONAL RESTORATION” in a paper in 1940. In 1970, Herbie Coleman and others were already using the term “PROVISIONAL RESTORATION,” and in 1974, Morton Amsterdam emphasized the importance of using PROVISIONAL RESTORATION for observing prognosis in his book. Thus, it appears that Provisional Restoration has been ingrained in clinical practice for over 50 years.
