Abstract
Patient: A 62-year-old male suffered from chewing difficulties. His dentures did not have sufficient retention and stability and his residual teeth were also remarkably mobile. As a result of the assessment, the case was diagnosed as having masticatory dysfunction caused by severe chronic periodontitis and poorly fitted dentures. As the final prostheses, root-supported overdentures with magnetic attachments were provided.
Discussion: About 4 years have passed since the overdentures were provided. The masticatory efficiency has improved, and the patient maintains good oral hygiene without any change of oral status. Some of the benefits of overdentures include the distribution of occlusal force against both the abutment teeth and the prevention of bone loss.
Conclusion: For this partially dentate case with non-vertical stop occlusion, providing the root-supported overdentures has achieved a successful long-term outcome.
