In order to identify data elements of serials, it is first examined what kinds of serials several university libraries have included in their catalogs of serials. Next, it is indicated that in comparison with ISBD (S) and AACR2 NCR 1977 edition has some problems in identifying serials with generic titles. It is hypothesized that identification of data elements of serials is not so much regarded in Japanese librarianship as in the West. Therefore, thirdly, taking as an example Union List of Scientific Serials in the Humanities and Social Sciences; European Languages, data elements in the catalog are closely examined. Lastly, a corporate body as an author of serial, which is foreign to Japanese librarianship, is discussed.
