Abstract

This paper examined applicability of functional structure analysis of the research articles using the Categories, the author previously proposed as a framework for analysing informational content of research articles. First, automatic assignment of the Categories is conducted to the corpus of research articles on Viral Hepatitis C (VHC), using probabilistic rules on lexical clues and Category-order. The result is,95.2% sentences in the corpus are assinged correct Categories, and it suggests automatic processing is feasible. Second, using the Categories, automatic extraction of sentences which are helpful to understand the state-of-the art of the VHC from the experimental fulltext database is conducted successfully. And the content of the exctracted sentences is also examined. Third, as another application of the Categories, document listed in references of each articles in the corpus are classified according to their function.
