Product architecture-based collaboration models between Japanese and Korean companies

Abstract

This paper analyzes specialty fields of Japanese and Korean companies on the basis of product architecture theory. Next, it examines complementary collaboration models between Japanese and Korean companies on the basis of architecture. This model is referred to as the “combined architectures business model.” Fundamentals to effective cooperation are an understanding by both companies in the partnership of their own strengths and weaknesses as well as that of the other company. Through such an understanding, it becomes possible to build a framework of mutual support that enhances the abilities of each company. It is believed that a system of complementary collaboration, which is able to transform differences in architecture into strengths, represents a new direction in specialization and collaboration. Therefore, the study of business models introduced in this paper has many implications for the collaborative development of production industries in the Asian region.
