Abstract

The title compounds, (2S,3S)-tartranilic acid and its novel 3-naphtyl substituted derivative, were synthesized, and the crystal structures were determined. The molecules have a common twisted structure consisting of a propanoic moiety, which is essentially identical to those of the previous tartaric acids and its monoamide. In the crystal structures, the hydrogen bonds form an infinity planar network for tartranilic acid, and an infinity helical network for the 3-naphtyl derivative.
