Abstract
An overview is made of buoyancy-driven convection in an enclosure. The flow is sustained by a differential heating at the vertical sidewalls and the interest is given to the time-dependent convective transports responding to the changes in boundary conditions. The relevant time scales of unsteady convection of an enclosed fluid are discussed. Of special concern are the unsteady convective phenomena in response to time-periodic thermal conditions. It is illustrated that the global flow could resonate with the externally-imposed periodicity. The physics of resonant buoyant convection is examined and possible applications toward heat transfer enhancement are explored.
