Abstract

This paper presents a framework for integrated assessment of export indicators in chemical industries. The integrated approach discussed in this paper is based on principal component analysis (PCA). The validity of the model is verified and validated by numerical taxonomy approach. Furthermore, a non-parametric correlation method, namely, Spearman correlation experiment shows high level of correlation between the findings of PCA and NT. To achieve the objectives of this study, a comprehensive study was conducted to locate export indicators based on international standards. The integrated assessment is influenced by such shaping factors as export value, production value, export growth, R&D expenditure and value added. The chemical industries are selected according to the format of International Standard for Industrial Classification (ISIC). To have an accurate assessment of the chemical industries and to minimize the bias, data related to a five years period is collected. The results of PCA show the weak and strong points of each chemical industry concerning export activities. Furthermore, it identifies which export indicators have the major impacts on the performance of chemical industries. The modeling approach of this paper could be used for ranking and analysis of other sectors in particular or countries in general. In summery this paper presents a unique standard methodology for assessment and ranking of chemical industries based export activities. Furthermore, it is shown how total export efficiency is obtained through a multivariate approach. The results of such studies would help top managers to have better understanding and improve existing systems with respect to export activities.
