Abstract
Carbon nanofiber was synthesized by alcohol catalytic chemical vapor deposition (ACCVD) using ethanol with metal (Fe and Zn) ions in argon atmosphere at 1473 K. Carbon nanofiber with 50 nm in diameter and more than several micrometer long was produced. The network-like junction was also observed in the carbon nanofiber. The specific surface area of nanofiber was 60.2 m2/g. The nanofiber adsorbed 1.49 mmol/g hydrogen at 77K. The metal observed in the nanofiber was iron and very small amount of zinc was observed in the nanofiber. The produced iron particles in the nanofiber showed spherical shape with several nano-meter in diameter. Growth of the onion-like carbon structure (turbostratic structure carbon) around the iron nano-particles was observed. Turbostratic structure carbon was observed in the outer shell of the carbon nanofiber. On the contrary, multi wall-like carbon nanotube was observed in the core of the nanofiber.
