Abstract
We analyzed inventries of rare plants in Shimanto Forest Planning Area, which is a model forest in southwestern Japan, in order to determine their forest dependancy, survival ability in secondary forests and in conifer plantations as the indices for evaluating the species diversity of monitoring sites. Four hundred and fifty-six species, which were regarded as rare plants on Red Data Book of Kochi Prefecture, were recorded in the area, including 199 forest dependent species which were considerably high ratio. Secondary forests were considered to be important as habitat for forest dependent rare plants because over 70% of forest dependent rare species were found growing in that type of forest. We discussed the effects of forest management on forest dependent rare plants.
