Abstract

Occurrence and character of egg masses of oval squid, Sepioteuthis lessonianain the outer waters adjacent to the Kii Channel, Japan were studied. Investigations for obserbation and sampling were carried out by SCUBA diving from August, 1988 to October, 1991. All capsules or egg masses were collected during from May to October. Each egg capsule contained 0-9 eggs (mean 5.5) and the range of number of eggs per egg mass was 137-1, 141 (mean 553) . The date of egg-laying and hatching of each egg capsules or egg mass collected were estimated by relationship between length of embryonic development and temperature under rearing condition. The period of egg-laying was estimated from late April to early October and that of hatching from early June to late October. Main period of egg-laying was estimated from May to July and that of hatching period from June to August.
