An overview is made on the occurrence of viral, parasitic and non-infectious diseases in cultured fin-fish in Ehime Prefecture from 1961 to 1993. Although major disease outbreaks in this area comprised bacterial infections, problems due to other diseases such as viral and parasitic diseases have been increasing recently. Iridovirus infection in young red sea bream, Pagrus major and several other fish species in net cages often caused losses as high as 20%. Lymphocystis disease, viral ascites of yellowtail, snout ulcer disease (“Kuchijiro-sho”) and some other viral diseases were also recorded. Major parasites included Cryptocaryon irritans (Ciliata), Bevicedenia seriolae, Heteraxine heterocerca, Bivagina tai, Heterobothrium okamotoi (Monogenea) and Paradeontacylix grandispinus and P. karnpachi (Digenea) . Occurrence of nutritional disease has decreased due to improved food quality.
