Abstract

Closed-system facilities is effecitve to avoid the unfavorable environmental conditions under eutrophication of coastal water and infection of disease. We are now researching the technology for specific pathogen free (SPF) broodstock cultivation in closed recirculating system which are disinfected to kill the pathogenic virus, bacteria or parasite in order to produce SPF postlarvae in penaeid shrimp. For SPF broodstock cultivation, hormonal treatments related to thoracic ganglion, brain or ovary have been used to mature and spawn female shrimp in tanks in conjunction with managements of water temperature, photoperiod, light intensity, areal density, sex ratio and nutrition. We have to repeat their maturation, spawning and mating in tanks in SPF broodstock during a long period for commercial SPF postlarval production. During these processes, the higher quality water must be maintained in maturation tanks for a long period using water recycling system with advanced water treatments in closed-system facility. This paper summarizes our present knowledges of the cultivation of SPF broodstock for SPF postlarval production in penaeid shrimp, and water recycling system in disinfected closed-system facilities for further development of commercial aquaculture industries.
