Digital Archives : A view from the Japan Center for Asian Historical Records

Abstract

This article deals with the present situation and the perspective on digital archives from the standpoint of the staff making a database at the Japan Center for Asian Historical Records. First of all, the structure and the concept of the database are described. Next, after discussing the conformation of functions such as the retrieval system for archival access, we report on some problems relating to the precision of the database.

Finally, the function and the position of the Center are discussed by reviewing the Centerʼs preparation plan. Views on digital archives are discussed, in particular by means of examining the problems and management of the Center as a public archives institution.
