Abstract
A good anti-hapten antibody response could be obtained only when lymphoid cells primed with a hapten-carrier were stimulated with hapten-heterologous carrier in the presence of the heterologous carrier-committed helper cells. Passively administered anti-hapten antibody specifically suppressed only the corresponding anti-hapten antibody response, but anti-carrier antibody suppressed both the anti-carrier and anti-hapten antibody responses. Anti-carrier antibody did not suppress the helper cell development. The suppression of anti-hapten antibody response by anti-carrier antibody seems to be the result of failure of cooperation between carrier-primed -T cells and hapten-primed B cells. Passively administered 3.5 S fragments of anti-carrier antibodies selectively prevented the stimulation of carrier specific antibody forming cell precursor to produce anti-carrier antibodies, but had no effect on the capacity of carrier-specific helper cells to facillitate the secondary anti-hapten antibody response.
