Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study the Ohara Museum of Art Sculpture appreciation program for young children: “Conversation for the appreciation of sculptures”, “Copying a sculpture in clay for appreciation”, and “Forming clay to something three dimensional”. In the conversation, the words from the staff help the children respond linguistically to the sculpture, and draw out the material responsiveness of the sculpture. Young children watch the sculpture carefully through copying, and get to know the particular nature of sculpture. In addition, in “Forming clay to something three dimensional”, they find out for themselves the relevance of self-expression by experiencing the difficulties in creating and finishing their own sculptural works. In the program, children see various styles of sculpture, and learn elements of them.
