Abstract

Based on the revised Basic Act for Persons with Disabilities (April 2011), the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (January 2014), and the “Universal Design 2020 Action Plan” (February 2017), the “Mind Barrier-Free Learning Promotion Council” (July 2017) was held. As a result, the introduction of universal design (UD) education in schools became mandatory. We recognize the importance of UD education in elementary schools, and in cooperation with local educational institutions, we have developed UD education programs for children and conducted on-site feasibility studies (FS). This research was summarized based on the knowledge obtained from the results of experience-based UD education experiments so far. The authors developed six steps to educate Universal Design for the children by six steps; 1st to know, 2nd to notice, 3rd to interact,4th to investigate, 5th to discuss and 6th to communicate.
